Divina Commedia

Brief

A personal digital lettering project inspired by some of the most evocative lines of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy.

The aim is to reinterpret the words through expressive typographic compositions, exploring the relationship between letterforms, meaning and visual imagery.

Approach

Each quotation becomes a standalone typographic composition, in which the lettering is the protagonist of the image.

Decorative typefaces, shifts in scale, interlacing and illustrated ornaments combine to evoke the atmosphere and meaning of the verses. Flowers, snow crystals and celestial motifs accompany the words, giving life to three different visual interpretations that share an ornamental, contemporary aesthetic.

Lettering “Amor ch'a nullo amato amar perdona” (Inferno V, 103) in warm pink with floral ornaments
Lettering “Là dove i peccatori stanno freschi” (Inferno XXXII, 117) in cold blues with snow crystals
Lettering “E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle” (Inferno XXXIV, 139) in turquoise on dark blue with stars
